10 Minutes Per Mile Apparently Counts as ‘Blistering Pace,’ Local Runner Discovers

A local woman was surprised today to discover that 10 minutes per mile is a “blistering pace,” Dumb Runner has learned.

“I’ve always associated that phrase with going super fast,” said Roberta Flack, 25, in a phone interview. “Apparently I was misinformed.”

Flack, who began running just last month, said she made the discovery during a four-mile run near her home. As usual, she said, she began the run by walking briskly for five minutes or so before easing into a pace of about 10 minutes per mile.

“It didn’t feel like a blistering place to me,” she said. “But sure enough, after about 20 minutes I started to feel some pain under my right foot.”

That pain gradually became so severe, said Flack, that she stopped around 35 minutes into her run and removed her shoe.

“I had such a blister on the side of my big toe,” she said. “Like, holy hell, it hurt.”

Flack conceded that she was wearing brand-new shoes and cotton socks, which presumably contributed to the blister.

Eventually, Flack put her shoe back on—“loosely,” she said—and walked the rest of the way home, where she took what she described as “a surprisingly painful shower.”

“It turns out that 10 minutes per mile is also a chafing pace,” she said. “Who knew?”
