A local man packing this morning for a five-day vacation decided to include a pair of running shoes, two pairs of shorts, and two technical tees, Dumb Runner has learned, apparently believing he will actually run during his time away.

Matt LaFleur, 35, a cheese importer and veteran of four half-marathons, was preparing for a stay at an all-inclusive beachfront resort in Los Cabos, Mexico. Sources called it “exceedingly unlikely” that he would run while there.

“I know Matt,” said one source, who requested anonymity. “He’s 50/50 on skipping his runs here at home, just on an average day. Does he really think he’s going to head out for a 5-miler when he’s on vacation at a place with breakfast buffets, ocean views, and not one but three swim-up bars?”

“Please,” the source added.

LaFleur has a long history of including running shoes when packing for trips and then not touching them until he unpacks upon returning home.

“He’s got to know, deep down, that he’s not going to run during his trip,” said another source close to LaFleur. “To my knowledge, he never has.”

“I don’t know if it’s a ‘hope springs eternal’ thing or just a form of denial. Either way, it’s sad.”

Reached for comment, LaFleur said he was looking forward to his vacation.

“It’ll be good to get away and relax for a few days,” he told Dumb Runner. “And I can’t wait to squeeze in a couple of runs.”
