The federal Food & Drug Administration today issued a strongly worded statement on GU Energy Chews, warning that the sports nutrition product may be dangerous for anyone allergic to “outrageously delicious flavors.”

The warning, published on the agency’s website and labeled, in tiny type, “SPONSORED CONTENT,” appeared under the headline, “Athletes, Beware! GU Energy Chews’ Radical Awesomeness May Knock You Off Your Feet.” Several links to GU’s website appear throughout the few paragraphs of text.

“Folks, if you are allergic to outrageously delicious flavors, we urge you to avoid GU Energy Chews, which deliver 22 grams of carbs along with a taste that you won’t believe,” according to the statement. “While it’s true that these Chews supply crucial electrolytes and amino acids, we have found that they also deliver flavors that may be too amazing for some to tolerate.”

By way of example, the statement includes this, which appears to be copied verbatim from a product description on GU’s own website:

Just like your grandmother’s homemade jam, Strawberry Energy Chews are perfectly sweet, a little tart, and definitely bold. It’s like they took the brightest strawberry right off the bush and packed that flavor into an energy-packed chew. They taste like a gummy snack, and work like a champion.
