Local Runner Blames Poor Marathon Performance on DEI

A local runner is blaming his disappointing marathon last weekend on diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, Dumb Runner has learned—an excuse that some find puzzling.

James Thurmond, 46, had started the race intending to finish in 3 hours 30 minutes or better; by the time he limped across the finish line, the clock showed a time of 4:22:39, and Thurmond was visibly upset.

“F***ing woke marathon,” he said, brushing past several volunteers offering space blankets and bottled water. “F***ing DEI.”

DEI stands for diversity, equity, and inclusion, which Wikipedia defines this way:

In the United States, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are organizational frameworks that seek to promote the fair treatment and full participation of all people, particularly groups who have historically been underrepresented or subject to discrimination based on identity or disability.

It was unclear how Thurmond believed that DEI affected his marathon performance, or how he determined the event itself was “woke.”

Reached for comment by phone, Thurmond said that Dumb Runner was probably a “diversity hire” and said “f*** DEI” before hanging up.
