A local runner who applied for the 2025 Boston Marathon was thrilled to receive an email yesterday from race organizers with a subject line reading, “It’s confirmed, Alan—you’re in!”

After opening the email, the recipient, Alan Smithee, 37, realized that the message was not about the prestigious race but rather an offer from Bank of America, the event’s title sponsor.

“That’s right, Alan,” the email began, “YOU’VE BEEN ACCEPTED … for a Bank of America® Unlimited Cash Rewards Credit Card!”

The email outlined the benefits of the card, including “unlimited 1.5% cash back on all purchases” and 0% APR for the first 15 billing cycles for purchases, and for any balance transfers made within the first 60 days of opening the account.

As he was reading that email, sources said, Smithee received another from the Boston Marathon, notifying him that he had not been accepted into next year’s race.

Reached for comment, Smithee described the back-to-back notifications as “sort of a good news, bad news kind of thing.”

“It’s a bummer I didn’t get into Boston,” he said. “But the credit card offer sounds pretty sweet.”
