A local runner who recently lost a toenail found reason to celebrate over the weekend when he woke to find the nail gone—and two crisp dollar bills under his pillow.

Fox Mulder, 37, ran downstairs early Sunday morning and announced the news to his wife, Dana Scully.

“Guess what?” Mulder said. “The Toenail Fairy came! And she left me two whole dollars!”

He held the bills up, one in each hand.

In a phone interview with Dumb Runner, Scully said she responded with feigned excitement.

“Wow, honey, that’s great!” she said. “Put your money somewhere safe, OK?”

Mulder promised he would, then skipped away.

Scully would neither confirm nor deny that she, in fact, is the Toenail Fairy, adding that she finds it charming that her husband of 11 years still gets so excited every time he loses a toenail. She also noted that he tries to stay up late enough to catch the Toenail Fairy in the act.

“He never does, of course,” she said. “Bless his heart.”

“What can I say? He wants to believe.”
