A local runner is still going strong despite his advanced age, Dumb Runner has learned, amazing and inspiring everyone he meets.

Dan Chase, 50, began running in his twenties and, as he puts it, “just kept going.”

“I never set out to be an inspiration or a role model or anything like that,” says the married father of four. “I just love to run.”

That love has made Chase a bit of a local celebrity. Just in the past year, he has been profiled in local print and TV media, delivered motivational talks to various groups, and celebrated his 20th lifetime marathon. (Yes, he’s still running marathons!)

At his age, Chase says, he does have to go a bit easier, and to take precautions that he didn’t at, say, age 30.

“I’m more conscientious about warming up and stretching these days,” he says. “And I definitely take care of any little aches and pains before they become something more serious.”

“Also,” he adds, laughing, “I’m a big fan of my daily nap.”

As for the future, Chase says he has no plans to stop.

“I’ll keep running as long as I can,” he says. “Maybe even into my sixties!”
