By her own account, Tracy Mills had been trying to become fit “for years and years.”

“It was so frustrating,” said the 37-year-old software engineer. “I would start a training program, get almost fit, then have to back off for some reason.”

Those reasons, according to Mills, a self-described longtime on-and-off-again runner, included things like injuries, heavy workloads, family emergencies, and sometimes, she admits, a simple lack of motivation.

“Each time I failed to achieve fitness, it felt worse,” she said.

After her sixth unsucessful attempt, Mills said, she was almost ready to give up forever.

“I was in a pretty dark place,” she said. “But I figured I would give it one final try.”

Mills soon found herself running four days a week on average, including a weekly speed or hill workout and a Saturday long run. Within a few months, she said, she was fit.

“It happened on a Thursday, 5:53 p.m.,” she said. “I’ll never forget it—the moment I became fit.”

Mills said she hopes others will find inspiration in her story.

“If I can become fit, you can too!” she said. “Never give up!”

What’s next for Mills, now that she’s achieved fitness? She said she has several other items on her bucket list.

“Next up, I think, I’ll try to become happy,” she said. “What would be great.”
