Ren Bomont is an avid runner with no known health issues and no family history of cancer, heart disease, or other life-changing diseases—but if he did suffer a major ailment, he said, he would continue to run.

“That’s just the kind of person I am,” said Bomont, 34, a veteran of three marathons and five half-marathons. “Nothing would stop me.”

Bomont, an insurance claims adjuster, concedes that he is currently very healthy and, in fact, always has been. Still, he said, he can imagine being sick or hurt—and he’s confident that he would persevere.

“If I found out I had a bad disease or something, I would absolutely still run,” he said. “I’d do marathons, even, just to inspire other people and stuff.”

“Probably I’d also raise money for the disease I had,” he added. “Plus awareness.”

Bomont said the same rule would apply if he were injured in, say, a car crash or a bad fall.

“If you’re using crutches or you lose a limb, you know, most people would probably just give up and feel sorry for themselve,” he said. “Not me. I’d lace up my shoes—or shoe, I guess, whichever—and get after it.”

Bomont, who has never done a triathlon, also suggested that he would enter and finish an Ironman event if he ever got “real sick or hurt.”

“People like me have a duty to show others what’s possible,” he said. “In my case, personally, that means talking about the stuff I would accomplish if I had a disease or whatever.”

Bomont said he’s trying to find work as a motivational speaker, so he can spread that message of hope and inspiration.

“So far, no takers,” he said. “But I’ll keep trying. It’s what I do.”
