Runner Who Carries Longbow Hopes He Never Has to Use It

A local man who carries a longbow and quiver of arrows on his runs for self-defense has never used it, Dumb Runner has learned, but “would, in a heartbeat.”

John Richard Schneider, 39, said he’s been running with the medieval weaponry for about two years.

“It’s just such a scary world,” he said. “You’re always hearing stories about runners being attacked. So eventually I decided that I should have some sort of protection.”

“I’m not interested in being another victim,” he added. “This gives me peace of mind.”

Schneider said he considered various options, including pepper spray, knives, and various firearms, before landing on the longbow.

“It’s a little cumbersome, yes, but it seemed the most effective overall,” he said, noting that the medieval weapon, which is effective up to 250 yards, can pierce plate armor—and that it has an impressive track record.

“If it was good enough for the forces of King Edward I at the battle of Agincourt,” Schneider said, “it’s good enough for me.”

Schneider said so far it’s worked like a charm.

“You know how many times I’ve been attacked since carrying this bad boy?” he said. “Zero.”

In fact, Schneider added, even “normal” people give him a wide berth when they see him and his longbow coming—a side effect that he’s perfectly fine with.

Asked whether he thinks he’s capable of piercing a fellow human being through the heart with a broadhead arrow, should the situation call for it, Schneider didn’t hesitate.

“If my life is in danger?” he said. “Absolutely.”

“I hope I never have to use it,” he said, referring to his weapon. “But if I do, I’ll be ready.”
