Plush running-specific socks are “an affordable luxury,” according to a local runner who recently treated herself to two more pairs, Dumb Runner has learned.

The runner, identified as Shari Lewis, 44, already owns 29 pairs of running socks, according to several sources, worth a collective $437. Lewis’ most recent purchases, a pair of Injinji TRAIL Midweight Crew CoolMax socks ($17) and a pair of Zensah Traction Running Socks ($25), will push that figure to $479.

“Times are tough,” Lewis told Dumb Runner in a phone call. “But I think it’s important to indulge yourself every once in a while, you know?”

“Nice running socks are a great way to do that, because in the grand scheme of things, they really aren’t that much money,” she said. “Nice socks are what I like to call an affordable luxury.”

“Plus, they’re socks; you can always use another pair of socks.”

Lewis also told Dumb Runner that she initially was going to buy just one pair of socks, but that she realized she would qualify for free shipping if she added a second pair.

“At that point, I couldn’t afford not to buy two pairs,” she said. “In this economy, I do try to make smart choices.”
