Local Runner Excited for That Weather Where You Can Still Wear Shorts But You Need a Long-Sleeved Shirt and Maybe Gloves But Just Thin Ones

A local runner says she’s eagerly awaiting the kind of weather that calls for long sleeves but is still warm enough for shorts, and you sort of need a pair of gloves, but not super-warm gloves, just those thin ones.

“It’s my absolute favorite time of year as a runner,” said Jody Banks, 47, a three-time marathoner. “Perfect running weather.”

Banks, who runs year-round and in all conditions, said she’s been spending weeks preparing for such weather, delayed this year by an uncharacteristically warm early fall.

“I pulled my long-sleeved shirts out from my under-the-bed storage box, and treated myself to a new pair of gloves,” she said. “The gloves have these special little patches on the thumb and forefinger so you can use your phone without taking off the gloves.”

With next week’s forecast calling for dry weather and morning temperatures around 45 degrees F, Banks said she can barely contain her excitement.

“Like, that moment you step outside and sort of shiver, and you can see your breath?” she said. “But you know you’ll warm up soon, and your shorts, long-sleeved shirt, and thin gloves will be just right, as far as your own comfort is concerned? Because the shirt is kind of warm but not, you know, too warm? There’s nothing like it.”

Asked whether she might consider swapping her long-sleeved shirt next week for a singlet and arm warmers, Banks paused before replying.

“Well, no,” she said. “What you’re talking about is shorts, gloves, and singlet-with-arm-warmers weather. Totally different thing.”
