Jeff Galloway, who died last week at age 80, is already winning new fans in heaven, Dumb Runner has learned, with God Himself calling the running icon a “super nice guy” and vowing to incorporate his trademark walk breaks into His own runs.

Galloway, who first gained fame as an elite and an Olympian, went on to inspire generations of runners with his run/walk/run approach to training and racing, as well as his relentlessly positive and inclusive approach to running; when he died, last Wednesday, runners flooded social media with tributes blending sorrow, gratitude, and love.

Now, that fan base includes the Almighty.

“I’ve met some great people up here, obviously,” God told Dumb Runner, making a rare statement to a mortal. “But wow, this Jeff Galloway guy is the best.”

The Cause of All Things said Galloway showed up with “the biggest smile you’ve ever seen” and immediately began asking around about running groups.

“I believe he mentioned starting an annual 10K,” said God. “Annual as in Earth years, I assume.”

By the time Sunday rolled around, Galloway had organized a long run.

“I decided to show up for it,” said the Creator, “because why not?”

That, He said, is when Galloway approached him and suggested taking walk breaks.

“I guess I was huffing and puffing a bit,” the Supreme Being conceded. “And Jeff began to talk up his run/walk thing.”

Initially, God said, he was skeptical. (“We’re running, right? Isn’t it, like, cheating to walk?”) But by the end of the run, He was sold.

“I mean, in a way, it makes sense, doesn’t it?” said the Lord and Master. “My habit is to work for six days and then take one off, so, kind of a run/walk approach, right?”

God said he felt so inspired after chatting with Galloway, he was considering signing up for a half-marathon.

“What a great guy,” He said.
