One day before his much-anticipated Boston Marathon debut, Eliud Kipchoge has commandeered an amphibious tour vehicle in that city’s Back Bay area and is leading police on a chase through the city, Dumb Runner has learned—an act from the famously quiet and genial athlete that has left witnesses stunned.

The vehicle is owned by Duck Tours, which takes sightseers around the city on land and water; it was idling near the Prudential Center, a short walk from the finish line of Monday’s race, when Kipchoge walked by and hopped on board, sources said.

Within seconds, the marathon world record holder had shifted the vehicle into gear and sped away from the curb. Authorities said they’re following the vehicle, described as “weaving in and out of traffic and going very fast,” from a distance while they decide how to slow or stop it. They also have offered no possible motive, though they said they have no reason to believe the act was planned.

“It appears to have been a crime of opportunity,” a Boston Police officer told Dumb Runner on the condition of anonymity. “Like a joyride or something.”

A witness who sent Dumb Runner a photo of the speeding vehicle speculated that the elite runner, regarded by many as the greatest marathoner of all time, may have “blown a fuse” under the pressure of breaking the course record at his first ever Boston Marathon.

That same witness, who also asked to remain anonymous, said that as the vehicle sped by, she heard Kipchoge screaming what appeared to be, “Quack quack.”

Officials are saying the vehicle contains roughly a dozen occupants, likely tourists, who appear to be fine—though a few seem frustrated at their inability to get any good photos of the city’s many landmarks.

Dumb Runner will update this story as it develops.
