Responding to an intense backlash after allowing a 6-year-old boy to run in its event last weekend, Cincinnati’s Flying Pig Marathon this morning announced “stringent new measures” to prevent such a thing from happening again.

Those measures, organizers said in a statement, are:

  1. Asking all participants to stand next to a sign reading “You Must Be This Tall to Run.”

  2. Refusing entry to anyone not tall enough to run.

“We take the health and safety of our participants extremely seriously,” read the statement. “Our decision to let a 6-year-old participate in last weekend’s marathon was a mistake, and these stringent new measures will ensure that it won’t happen again.”

The statement went on to say that the “You Must Be This Tall to Run” requirement, which takes effect immediately, will be “strictly enforced” and that “standing on tippy toes will not be tolerated.”

Reached for comment, the parents of the 6-year-old in question told Dumb Runner that their son is recovering well and “practically begging” to train for the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run in June.
