A local runner who injured herself over the weekend is asking a Facebook group for tips on what to do about it, Dumb Runner has learned, despite clearly needing a doctor.
June Foray, 36, fell during a trail run Saturday morning, she wrote in a post to the group Runners Doing Running, and “really messed (herself) up.”
“Don’t ask me how it happened, LOL,” she wrote. “But I scraped myself up pretty bad, my left knee is swollen and painful, and now it hurts even to walk.”
“Also, my left shin bone is SUPER bad, like, it’s busted and actually poking through my skin.”
“Any advice?” she wrote.
The injury Foray is describing is known as a compound fracture, experts said, and requires immediate medical attention.
“Jesus Christ,” said Edward Everett Horton, M.D., an emergency room physician. “This person has a compound fracture, and she’s asking a bunch of random jamokes on Facebook for advice?”
The jamokes in question leapt to offer tips for Foray, from stretches she could do to dietary supplements. One group member recommended she “take it easy for a few days, maybe try some low-impact exercise, like swimming or cycling.”
“Maybe new shoes?” wrote another.
None suggested consulting a doctor.
Reached for comment, Foray told Dumb Runner that she’s grateful for all the advice.
“Runners Doing Running is such a great group,” she said. “They’re super supportive, and it’s nice to be able to tap into their collective wisdom.”
