NYC Marathon Announces 'Virtual Race Apparel'

Responding to the popularity of their “virtual marathon” option, New York City Marathon organizers are now selling virtual race apparel.

“What better way to commemorate your simulated marathon than with a simulated shirt?” said Finn Barnum, a marathon spokesman.

The event in question is the TCS New York City Marathon – Virtual 26.2M. Launched this year, it “allows runners anywhere in the world to run [the New York City Marathon] at their convenience and location of their choice,” according to the New York Road Runners. The virtual marathon, which has sold out, costs $100 for NYRR members and $120 for non-members.

Official virtual apparel, which can be downloaded directly from the event’s online store, starts at $34.99 for a virtual short sleeve technical shirt to $149.99 for an official virtual finisher’s jacket.

If that seems like a lot of money for gear that doesn’t actually exist, Barnum is quick to point out a real, tangible benefit that comes with each purchase.

“Runners who buy a 2018 New York City Marathon virtual race shirt are guaranteed the opportunity to pay for a real shirt at the 2019 New York City Marathon,” he said. “If you buy a virtual jacket this year, you’re guaranteed a chance to buy a real jacket next year. And so on.”

Barnum added that he’s encouraging virtual marathoners who want an official virtual race shirt or jacket to act soon.

“We have a limited number of downloads available for purchase,” he said. “Hurry and get yours today!”
