Participants at a local mud run are used to navigating challenges such as mud pits, 8-foot walls, and electrified wires. Now they’ll face a new one — personalized mockery.

The latest obstacle, part of the Sloppy Lunatic X-Treme Race Seriez, comes in the form of a large bearded man named Rodney who lurks in a deep mud puddle, springing up as competitors approach and hurling insults at them.

The addition was announced in a statement yesterday from event officials.

“Competitors have come to expect X-Treme obstacles at Sloppy Lunatic events,” the statement said. “In the past, these have involved things like mud and water, wood and netting, barbed wire and high voltage.”

“Today, we are pleased to announce our newest and perhaps most diabolical obstacle of all: a barrage of snide comments from Rodney.”

The statement did not further identify Rodney, apart from mentioning that he is “well practiced in generating cutting remarks on the fly,” and delivering them with “a deep, booming voice that will shake you to your core.”

Those remarks may involve comments on a participant’s running style; climbing, jumping, or crawling technique; overall strength; and choice of apparel and gear, the statement continued, and even things like body shape, weight, and looks “are not off limits.”

“During our events, Rodney will have one job and one job only,” the statement said. “And that will be to do his level best to reduce each competitor to tears, using nothing but his brutal insults.”

Reached for comment, Rodney said “Dumb Runner” sounded like a perfect description of me and added that my voice makes me sound like a goddamn wuss.
