Local Kid Doesn’t Need This Kind of Pressure

A local boy in a shirt reading “Future Marathoner” doesn’t need that kind of pressure, Dumb Runner has learned.

David Mercury, the boy wearing the shirt, made the assertion via a series of grimaces. A source close to the situation told Dumb Runner that the boy’s parents are both runners and that the shirt was a gift from a family friend.

“Frankly, this kid has enough on his plate,” said the source, who requested anonymity. “Expecting him to run a marathon, or marathons, at some point in the future is just not cool.”

According to the source, David is already facing challenges with such everyday tasks as hand-to-eye coordination, using a toilet, and feeling secure around strangers—not to mention the more subtle, but still very real, weight of society’s other expectations.

“He might not be conscious of it yet,” the source said, “but there’s also pressure to meet social norms, have lots of friends, go to college, get a job, the list goes on and on.”

“Putting [David] on a marathon runner track right now, before he even knows what a marathon is, is too much.”

Reached for comment, David spit up.
