A local woman is celebrating 12 months of running during which she reached zero health and fitness goals, Dumb Runner has learned—because, she said, she never set any goals in the first place.

“I’m really very happy with my year in running,” said Jean Lundegaard, 36, a longtime runner who kicked off 2020 with no races on her calendar; no weekly, monthly, or annual mileage targets; no fitness-related “bucket list” items to cross off a list; and no intent to improve any of her personal records.

“I ran, and it was good.”

Lundegaard, who also has no idea how much she weighs, how much body fat she carries, or what her resting heart rate is, said she intends to follow the same plan for 2021. That plan, she said, means that she runs “a few times a week,” sometimes hard but usually not, sometimes on roads, sometimes on trails, for anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours, depending on how she feels and how much time she has.

Her final run of the year, said Lundegaard, was an impromptu jog this morning through a nearby nature preserve, lasting approximately 40 minutes.

“I’m not sure how far that would be,” she said. “Maybe five miles, give or take?”

Lundegaard decribed the run as “amazing,” despite the lack of purpose or data.

“I saw a deer!” she said.
