When Isabel Sanford toes the line at this weekend’s New York City Marathon, she’ll be motivated by something more than personal glory or clocking a fast time. In fact, said the 28-year-old science teacher, those things will be far from her mind.

“This year,” Sanford said, “I’m running the New York City Marathon to raise funds for a cause that’s near and dear to my heart: the New York City Marathon.”

Sanford has already generated $295 for the event, which will mark its 50th running on Sunday, November 7. That is the entry fee for Americans who are not members of the New York Road Runners, which organizes the race. By the time she flies home afterward, Sanford said, she expects to have tripled that amount, at least, with purchases of official New York City Marathon merchandise, such as a race jacket, hat, tee, hoodie, and possibly a pair of NYC Marathon Edition FuelCell RC Elite v2 New Balance running shoes.

“All in,” Sanford said, “I think I can generate more than a thousand bucks.”

This will be Sanford’s sixth marathon, she said, but the first one she’s run for a cause—a twist that has helped the longtime runner remain motivated.

“Whenever I felt like cutting a workout short, or skipping a run,” she said, “I would remind myself that I was doing this for something bigger, that it wasn’t just about me.”

“It worked every time.”

Sanford said she expects that motivation to carry her to the finish line this Sunday, and beyond—she’s already looking ahead to her next charitable effort.

“I would love to run the Boston Marathon,” she said, “to raise money for the Boston Marathon.”
